New research has shown that the incidence of Oral Cancer is THREE TIMES GREATER than the incidence of cervical cancer. In the United States, 30 000 patients are diagnosed annually with oral cancer and the 5-year survival rate is only 50%, accounting for 8 000 deaths each year. Recent research shows 25% of all newly diagnosed cases have been in patients under the age of forty with none of the known risk factors, such as tobacco and alcohol use. Dentistry is making a great effort to detect oral cancer in the earliest stages, when treatment is most successful.
